Annual EEO Public File Report

  

            The purpose of the EEO Public File Report (396) is to comply with Section 73.2080(c)(6) of the FCC’s 2002 EEO Rule. This Report has been prepared on behalf of the Station Employment Unit that is comprised of the following stations: WGGB, Springfield, MA and is required to be placed in the public inspection files of these stations, and posted on their web sites, if they have web sites.

            The information contained in this Report covers the time period beginning

November 24, 2007 to and including November 21, 2008 (the “Applicable Period”).

The FCC’s 2002 EEO Rule requires that this Report contain the following information:

  • 1. A list of all full-time vacancies filled by the Stations comprising the Station Employment Unit during the Applicable Period;
  • 2. For each such vacancy, the recruitment source(s) utilized to fill the vacancy (including, if applicable, organizations entitled to notification pursuant to Section 73.2080(c)(1)(ii) of the new EEO Rule, which should be separately identified by name, address, contact person and telephone number;
  • 3. The recruitment source that referred the hiree for each full-time vacancy during the Applicable Period;
  • 4. Data reflecting the total number of persons interviewed for full-time vacancies during the Applicable Period and the total number of interviewees referred by each recruitment source utilized in connection with such vacancies; and
  • 5. A list and brief description of the initiatives undertaken pursuant to Sections 73.2080(c)(2) of the FCC rules.

Appendices 1, 2, and 3, which follow, have been designed, in the aggregate, to provide the required information. Please note that the numbers listed on Appendix 2 under the column entitle “Full-time Positions for Which This Source Was Utilized” refer to the number of the full-time job positions listed on Appendix 1.

For the purposes of this Report, a vacancy was deemed “filled” not when the offer was extended but when the hiree accepted the job offer and started in the position.  A person was deemed “interviewed” when he or she was interviewed in person.

WGGB attended a Career Job Fair at UMASS Amherst

Jim McKeever, Promotions Manager and Pamela Phelps, Promotion Producer from the station went to the job fair to meet students and accept applications and resumes.  It was very helpful in filling some of our positions.

 

 

Educational Events

Outreach through Foundations, Colleges & High Schools

Date:  March 8, 2008

WGGB’s Community Affairs Director, Kathy Tobin met with the Cherish Every

Child/Davis Foundation to solidify and strategize WGGB’s plans for our long-term PSA campaign that will tie in with the community based/business supported effort to improve education and thereby strengthen workforce.  The Davis foundation also recognizes WGGB’s involvement in our effort at the “Breakfast of Champions”.

Date: 2008

Students of Character is a joint effort with WGGB and the Republican.  The students send in suggestions for exemplary students.  The students are profiled by WGGB’s

employee, Daniel Brown.  It’s where we recognize students who go above and beyond in the classroom and give back to the community in which they live. The winner receives a 4 year scholarship from American International College and a laptop.

Abc40/Fox6 partnered with Springfield’s Sci-Tech during the launch of its new magnet school.  We took part in their ‘mock accident,” playing the role of media and helping students study the role media plays.  This also provided a unique education story for our newscast.  This collaboration arose from a meeting Kathy Tobin, our Community Affairs Director attended with school administrators which also brought us our first Springfield High School intern.  This intern joined us the second week of September and will hopefully be the model for early employee recruitment in the years ahead.

Eric Fisher , WGGB Meteorologist, attended Southwick Public Library,  in

Southwick, MA and  read Dr. Seuss books for “Read Across America Day”.  There

were about 60 children from early childhood to second graders.

James McKeever, Promotion Manager, was asked to be a guest speaker at the

Advertising and Promotion class at Springfield Technical Community College, in

Springfield, MA.  James spoke about the advantages of promoting your own product

while not having it cost a dime.  He also mentioned the importance of advertising

your product and getting it out there to the public. He also gave them some suggestions

for some good marketing and promotion colleges in the area.

Eric Fisher, WGGB Meteorologist,  was Master of Ceremonies for the Inspirational

Speaker Event sponsored by the Mass Mutual Center, Springfield, MA.  The event

emphasized the importance of responsible driving.  Audience comprised of approximately 1,500 high school students for area schools.

Date:  May 1, 2008

Eric Fisher, WGGB Meteorologist, attended Career Night at SUNY in Albany, NY.

Eric did a presentation in careers in broadcasting, especially Meteorology  to

the earth and science majors at the university.

Students from Duggan Middle School took a field trip to the WGGB studios.

Eric Fisher, WGGB Meteorologist, gave them a tour around the studio, showed

them how the news and weather was broadcast.  He also taught them about the

basics of gardening.  He held a question and answer session at the end of his

presentation.

the importance of math and science with regards to becoming a Meteorologist on or off

the air.  Eric talked about the nature of the business and his daily routine on how he

prepares his forecasts and gets ready to go on air.  He also held a question and answer

segment at the end of his talk.  Content is age specific.

East Longmeadow, MA and spoke pre-schoolers about basic weather symbols found on the weather maps, precipitation types, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc. He spoke  for about 40 minutes and answered questions from the students.  Content is age specific.

attended a Career Day at Sci-Tech High School, Springfield, MA to speak

about the broadcasting industry and what courses were needed to proceed

in the career of broadcasting.

Dan also spoke about what goes into getting the forecast on the air.  He also held a question and answer segment at the end.  Content is age specific.

 

Internship Program

The station has an internship program as defined below:

Program Objectives:

1.  Develop links with technical schools, universities and colleges to promote the        station as a prospective employer.

  • 2. Create a symbiotic relationship between interns and station employees.
  • 3. Provide interns with opportunities for translating classroom theories into industry applications. Interns will have the chance to develop practical skills that will improve their chances for success with the broadcast industry.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • 1. The applicant must be attending an accredited institution. Graduate students also

are eligible.  Preferably, applicants should be communication majors, though

other majors may be considered.

  • 2. The applicant must be at least 18 years of age.
  • 3. The applicant must be in good academic standing, as defined by his or her academic institution.
  • 4. The applicant must receive academic credit for the internship experience. He or she must be registered for college credit at his or her institution during the quarter or semester in which the internship is performed. Interns are not paid.
  • 5. In addition to meeting the institution’s eligibility requirements, the applicant must

meet the station’s eligibility requirements.

WGGB, Springfield, MA had a total of 33 interns during this period – 21 from University

of Massachusetts, 5 from Springfield College, 3 from Western New England College,

2 from Quinnipiac College, 1 from Lyndon State College, 1 from Goucher College.
