Fellow sophomore Bettencourt finished 2-for-2 with a two-run home run, a double, and a walk. She scored the first run of the game on Carta’s double with two outs in the fourth inning, the first two hits of the game. Bettencourt came to bat in the sixth inning with Kyllie Magill at first base after reaching on an error and blasted her fifth home run of the season, a line shot to straight away center field that made it a 3-0 game.
Teea Rogers picked up UMass’ other hit, a single in the fifth inning.
Emily Jeffery (14-5) took the loss for Charlotte, allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and two walk with seven strikeouts.
The same two teams meet again on Saturday at the UMass Softball Complex with first pitch slated for noon.
