Springfield Lax to Host Widener Wednesday at 4

Springfield, Mass. – May 10, 2010 – For the third-straight season, the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team has earned a berth into the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Tournament and will host Widener University of Chester, Pa. in an opening round game on Wednesday.

The two teams will square off at 4:00 pm on Stagg Field.

The winner of the game will then travel to square off against national-power, Salisbury, on Saturday in the Sweet 16. In last week’s USILA Coaches National Poll, Salisbury was ranked second in the nation.

The 22-team field for the national tournament was announced Sunday night (May 3) on the CBS College Sports Network. Springfield was the lone team from the North to be placed in the South bracket.

Springfield earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament after winning the Pilgrim Lacrosse League for the third-straight year by defeating Wheaton, 12-7, on Saturday. SC stands at 12-5 on the year and enters the NCAA Tournament as winners of 11 of its last 12 contests.

This marks the first time in program history that Springfield has played Widener.

Widener, whose nickname is also the Pride, will make its eighth trip to the NCAA Tournament and first since 2008. Widener claimed its fifth title in six years with Saturday’s 10-8 victory at FDU-Florham and did so in improbable fashion, winning the tournament as the six seed after winning all three games in their tournament on the road. They enter the tournament with a 10-9 overall record.
