Pumpkin picking lesson

by Jenna Hagist

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — It’s a writing lesson that’s giving these students a sense of accomplishment.

Students at Homer Elementary School in Springfield are getting a special reading and writing lesson in the classroom. Teacher Michelle Emirzian is giving these first graders a lesson on writing descriptively.

“I purchased thirty pumpkins and the idea was for the students to write a description of their pumpkins,” said Michelle Emirzian.

The best part about this lesson is that each student is able to take the pumpkin home with them. Although, she isn’t just providing pumpkins to one class, she’s providing a pumpkin to every student in the school.

“I spoke to my husband, and I said I would really like to make sure everyone has a pumpkin, after they write about it so they can take it home. So we went to the North Hadley Sugar Shack and the gave us a reduced rate and we were able to purchase pumpkins for everyone in the school, added Emirzian.
