Student of Character – Thanh Duong

By: Jenna Hagist

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Thanh Duong is happy to call Cathedral High School her new home.

“Here people are really, really nice. They talk to me, they try to be friends with me, and I think that’s great,” said Thanh Duong.

She moved away from her family in Vietnam three years ago to come to the U.S.

“At first I missed them then I get use to it. I just want to make them proud because they spend a lot of money on me,” added Duong.

“Can you imagine being here, you’re away from your family. Your mother and father are thousands of miles away and they sent you here to get a good education, they’ve got to be proud of her,” said her guidance counselor Cheryl Delviscio.

Delviscio says Thanh never gives up, despite her language barrier.

“It would just be so easy for her to say oh I don’t understand it, I couldn’t understand, but she never says that. She grabs it and makes it her own and works so hard,” added Delviscio.

“I just do my best whatever the teacher wants me to do I just want to contribute to the country, school,” continued Duong.

As a member of the National Honor Society and plans to go to the University of Kentucky next year, Thanh has a bright academic future.

“I wish for her only happiness and only success. She’s truly one of my favorite people,” continued Duong.

And that’s why Thanh Duong is this week’s abc40 Student of Character.
