Evacuations Ordered Following River Flooding

LONGMEADOW AND EASTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — Connecticut River flooding is causing problems up and down the Pioneer Valley.

In Longmeadow the fire department has ordered evacuation warnings to residents who live along the river. The streets included are West Road, Dunn Road, Anthony Road, and Emerson Road in Longmeadow.

Some residents have evacuated. Others like sisters Mary Salerno and Joan Ottani are waiting. They say if it gets worse and they feel endangered they will evacuate.

Meanwhile Connecticut River flooding closed down a section of Route 5 from Easthampton into Northampton.

Nearby, Fort Hill Road was also closed as water covered the road and forced residents to use canoes and kayaks to get to the nearby Easthampton Rod and Gun Club.

Along Route 5, cars couldn’t get through the water but bicyclists like Mark Lewis of Easthampton carried their bikes along a section of railroad tracks to get passed the flooded street.
