Ludlow Volleyball Star Shannon Robitaille: ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week

SPRINGFIELD, Mass (WGGB) –When you think about high school sports in the town of Ludlow I’ll bet soccer is the first sport you think of.

But this year that’s not necessarily the case.  The girls volleyball team has shifted the attention from outdoors to indoors.  And a big reason why has been the play of senior captain Shannon Robitaille.  The Lions are undefeated, and we chose Shannon as our ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week.

”She’s our leader,” said Ludlow coach Pat Annecchiarico.  “I could actually walk away from practice right now and she knows the routine.”

”She demands the work ethic from all the girls and she leads by example.”

I guess everyone finds something that they’re good at and something that they love,” said Shannon.

”For some people it’s school. Some people it’s basketball or softball, some of those sports. Bit I guess I found mine was volleyball.”

And on the volleyball courts of Western Massachusetts Ludlow’s Shannon Robitaille makes it look as easy as she makes it sound.

With Shannon leading the way the Ludlow girls are having a perfect season.  There are some great volleyball teams in Western Mass.  Teams like Frontier, Minnechaug, and Longmeadow.  But only Ludlow is undefeated.

With Shannon front and center Ludlow has 14 wins in 14 games.  Not bad for this accidental senior captain.

“I didn’t want to run cross country,” said Shannon.  “That definitely wasn’t going to be for me. So I decided to pick up volleyball. It turned into my full-time sport.”

”I stopped playing basketball. I kept up with softball, but we’ll see how it goes this year. My new love is volleyball. I love it.”

”She’s a great person.  ”She’s just great,” said Ludlow junior Ava Adamopoulos.

”She’s a good friend and a great captain. She’s a great leader, she works well with us. She’s just a great person.”

”She completely deserves everything that’s been happening to our team this year. She deserves beibng captain. She deserves the Athlete of the Week. She’s just great.”

And Shannon’s teammates do count on her.  For almost everything.

Whether playing the part of a close friend or a demanding captain, it’s all about Shannon all the time.

“Obviously Ludlow we’re known for soccer., ” said Shannon.  “Volleyball isn’t really our key sport.”

”But I mean we’re coming in and showing a lot of people that we actually are a solid program and we can put up a fight against a good team.”

”I’m having a good time. I like it.”

Leading the way on and off the volleyball court, Ludlow’s Shannon Robitaille is this weeks ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week.
