Longmeadow’s Colin Whitney: ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week

LONGMEADOW, Mass (WGGB) — When you think of Longmeadow high school, what’s the first sport that comes to mind.

Probably the football team that makes the Super Bowl its annual destination.  Same could be said for the girls lacrosse team that seems to make the final final its annual event.

But if you were to say the boys golf team at Longmeadow you’d be correct all over again.  This year the Lancers won the Western Mass title again, and as they prepare for this Monday’s state championship, it will be Colin Whitney lending a solid stroke and a guiding hand to his Lancer teammates.

“It’s really a mental game for me.  I try to get myself prepared for the course and whatever conditions that might be in play that day.  I’ll just focus on positives and not so much the negatives in my game.”

And through his four years of playing golf for the Longmeadow Lancers, the positives have far outweighed the negatives in Colin Whitney’s golf game.

Colin carries a one handicap at Longmeadow.  He helped his team win the Western Mass golf title last Monday at Ludlow.  But most impressive about this gifted young man is the fact that he’s a man for all seasons.

Golf in the fall, basketball in the winter, and lacrosse in the fall.

“Being a three sport varsity athlete gave me the discipline on how to manage my time and preparing me for other situations I might be dealing with later in life.”
“It was touch at first to not dedicate all my time to golf.  But I’ve done what I can with the time I have.  I’m pretty pleased with how I’ve dealt with that and still be successful.”

And if there’s a secret to Collin Whitney’s success it would most certainly be the support of his family.  Colin is a third generation golfer at the Longmeadow Country Club.  It all started with his grandfather.

“My grandpa grew up playing golf, actually at the Longmeadow Country Club here.”

“My dad was a big influence on me too.  Ever since I was little and could start playing on the course, he’d bring me out to chip and putt.  We’d play a lot on weeknights till five or six o’clock.”
“That kind of gave me the drive to play throughout the entire fall, and continue that instead of other sports I could have been playing.”

The Longmeadow golf teams gang of six will take its Western Mass title into the Division One state championship this Monday at The International.  One giant step left in what has been a memorable season.

“Longmeadow high school hasn’t won states since 2004, so it’s been some time.  Winning the state tournament, I could only imagine the feeling because you’d be the best golf team in the region.”

“That would be an awesome experience for me personally and for the team.  So we’re going to go there and give it our all.”

Giving it his all in the winter, spring, and the fall is Longmeadow golfer Colin Whitney, he’s this weeks ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week.
