Frontier Red Hawk Volleyball star Cassidy Stankowski: This Weeks ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week

SOUTH DEERFIELD,  Mass (WGGB) — The Frontier girls volleyball team will soon begin defense of its state championship, and the player that leads the Red Hawks is junior star Cassidy Stankowski.

What Frontier has been able to accomplish on the volleyball court is just downright amazing.  A small school here in Western Mass that is looked at as one of the top volleyball powers in New England.

Because of her teams accomplishments, and her ability to single handedly take over a volleyball game, we decided to name Frontier’s Cassidy Stankowski our ABC40/Fox6 Athlete of the Week.

“It’s kind of like the Michael Jordan days,” said Frontier head coach Sean McDonald.  “You knew he was going to get it and he’s still scoring 40-50 points, and evetybody knows that its fed to him.   That’s what she’s up against. The defense is going after her and she still comes through for us.”

And like Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to six NBA Titles, Cassidy Stankowski is working hard every day to try and lead the Frontier Red Hawks to a second straight state volleyball title.

In any sport, in any season, there is always that one player that stands above the rest.  But in cassidy’s case, she doesn’t so much stand above the rest as she does leap above the rest.

Short is stature but tall in her deeds, Cassidy is the best volleyballplayer in the state.  And she plays on a team that plays well, and plays together.

“Its been great,” said Cassidy.  The girls have been like a family and its just been so much fun. Last year we had a strong team, but this year we came back and we’re ready, and we know what we’re going to be up against. We’re just fighting through it and here we are.”

“Everybody who’s saying it’s a rebuilding year, it’s not. We’re back at it and we’re ready. From the beginning of the season we said state championship, and we’re not letting up at all.  That would be so important not only to me, but the rest of my team too.”

And led by Cassidy’s high wire act, Frontier is coming off a season that saw them go 26-0, and beat Case High school to win the 2010 state volleyball title.  And speaking of titles, they seem to run in the family.

Cassidy’s sister Alyssa won state titles at Frontier in 2005 and 2006.  And don;t think there isn’t a little competition there.

“My sister won two state championships,” said Cassidy.   ”So one more than her would be pretty cool.”

“She always says, ‘I have two, I have two’, but it would be amazing to get three in my career. To get there I would have to win Western Mass Championships, which means I would have won a WMass Championship every year.”

“Playing with my sister was the best thing that ever happened to me. We’re best friends on and off the court. And yes we might bicker now and then on the court. But in the end we are best friends, we are sisters. We’re family and it always works out. It’s just an awesome feeling. Its been great.”

Frontier will open the post season next Tuesday on their home court.  A Western Mass and State Championship are well within ready.
