West Springfield Defense Contractor Announces Layoffs

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A manufacturer of defense parts, with an office in West Springfield, has announced that they will be laying off some employees.

ITT Exelis spokesperson Irene Lockwood says that “recent changes in defense spending” has had an impact on the business and as a result, they have to “change their production supply and the employee headcount” at their West Springfield facility.

The plant manufactures power supplies for night vision technology used by the military.

Lockwood said it is not known how many of the 370 employees in West Springfield will be effected by the layoffs, which are slated to take place in the early part of 2012.  She said that that would be known once they evaluate their business needs.

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, ITT Exelis employs approximately 21,000 people nationwide.
