BOSTON (AP) — Gov. Deval Patrick will propose a 50 cent per pack increase in the state’s cigarette tax as part a plan to raise $260 million in new revenues for the state budget.

An administration official also said Friday that it would end the candy-and-soda exemption from the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax, and expand the bottle deposit law to include bottled water, sports drinks and other beverages.

The proposed increase in the cigarette tax from $2.51 per pack to $3.01 per pack was expected to raise $73 million to help cover the cost of a recent court decision allowing thousands of legal immigrants to join the state-subsidized health insurance program.

The governor will also seek to eliminate some corporate tax deductions. Patrick formally unveils his proposed spending plan Wednesday for the next fiscal year.
