Two UMass Alums Head to the Superbowl

Watching Sunday’s playoff games was thrilling for football fans, even more so for Former UMass Football Coach Kevin Morris, watching two superstars who used to play for him.  Patriots Safety James Ihedigbo graduated UMass in 2007…..New York Giants Wide Receiver Victor Cruz in 2010.

“It’s very exciting especially with Victor a wide receiver and James a defensive back, a lot of times Victor goes over the middle and James covers that area so it should be a great match up,” said Morris.

Even though it’s been a few years, Morris remembers them both.

“Thing that stands out about James was his leadership, his senior year he was the best leader we every had,” said Morris.

“Vic is just a great kid, great hands he could catch anything. We kept telling scouts to give him a chance and the Giants were the only ones that did,” added Morris.

And he’s proving his worth, becoming quarterback Eli Manning’s go-to guy on the field, catching 10-passes in Sunday’s N-F-C championship game.

Even watching him play on tv, Morris can still see the same player only better.

“I see more of the same things he did in college, he’s just refined them now to the next level. Two great kids who understand what work is about, great work ethic. They didn’t have the road paved for them.  They were both undrafted, they got into camp and earned their way,” said Morris.

Of course we had to ask about Victors now famous end-zone salsa moves.

“Did Victor Cruz dance at UMass? Ha ha we had to calm him down on the dancing thing and have him get in the end-zone.  He’s dancing now! Yeah the NFL allows dancing,” Morris said with a chuckle.

Morris said he isn’t routing for either the Pats or the Giants, he’s only pulling for his guys to have great games.
