SPRINGFIELD, Massachusetts (WGGB) — Ameristar Casinos has closed on land in Springfield, where they want to building a casino resort. The 41 acre site on Page Boulevard was once home to Westinghouse. “We now own what we believe to be the premier location for a casino in western Massachusetts,” said Gordon Kanofsky, Ameristar’s Chief Executive Officer.
Ameristar bought the site just off Interstate 291 for $16 million from an affiliate of the O’Connell Development Group Inc. The buildings on the site have been razed, and Ameristar says the property is being delivered to them substantially ready for construction. Ameristar’s development plans are preliminary, but are expected to include a state-of-the-art casino, a luxury hotel, along with restaurants and shops.
Springfield is one of a number of proposed sites for a Western Massachusetts casino. Mohegan Sun has an option to build a casino in Palmer, MGM Grand has joined forces with a local developer in proposing a casino for Brimfield, while Hard Rock has its sights set on Holyoke.
