SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – A section of Worthington Street will soon be closed to traffic from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays into Sunday morning.
The Public Health & Safety Committee of the City Council agreed Thursday to take this step for a period of 90 days as a way to test out if it will help to curb crime and violence in that area.
“I think our eye has to be toward public safety and we know time and time again it seems like there is problems on the Worthington Street corridor, the upper part of that street,” said City Councilor Tom Ashe.
Beginning in mid-February traffic will not be allowed on Worthington St. between Stearns Sq. to Dwight Street.
“I think some of the problems we see down there are cruising patterns. Patterns of people from out of town, maybe from other states that come up and cruise the neighborhood looking to see what’s happening and those people aren’t always looking for good things,” said Springfield Deputy Police Chief William Cochrane.
After the 90 day trial period the police department will analyze the data and let the city council know if the road block curbed the violence.

I think its a great idea. There is to much crime in this area and if Springfield hopes to get the casino then it needs to clean it’s act up!
