Woman In Holyoke Fire Has Died

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB)– The woman in yesterday’s fire at Elmwood Towers in Holyoke has died.

 Lt. Thomas Paquin, Fire Department Public Information Officer says 51-year old Aleida Santiago, “Has passed away.”

The fire broke out Monday morning at the Elmwood Towers elderly housing complex in Holyoke.

Lt. Paquin says when firefighters got to the scene they discovered two people inside the apartment.” At 8:35 this morning we got a call, the alarms came in in the building so when we got here the deputy went in the apartment, saw the couch on fire with a woman sitting on the couch, her clothes were also on fire,” says Paquin.

The woman was identified as 51-year old Aleida Santiago who suffered extensive burns. She was taken to Baystate Medical Center and the flown to Mass General Hospital in Boston.

The man, 68-year old Donald Basile, was treated for smoke inhalation at Holyoke Medical Center.

Fire investigators believe the probable cause involved smoking materials.
