Police Identify Individual Struck and Killed by a Train in Pittsfield

Pittsfield, Mass. (WGGB) — A man was struck and killed by a 2 engine train tonight in Pittsfield.

The Police Department says they received the report at 7:12 p.m. and responded immediately to the scene at the train station on Depot Street.

Officer Jeffrey Coco told ABC40, “We have identified the individual to be 44 year-old, John Castonguay of Pittsfield.  He died as a result of  being struck by the train.”

While the reason for the accident is unknown at this time, police continue to investigate the situation.

Coco says that the conductor of the train which is owned by CSX, did observe a person on the tracks and let out a warning sound.  But the individual only waived back, and the conductor could not stop the train in time.

” The train was traveling westbound at a speed of 25 miles an hour when this occurred,”  adds Coco.

Police are asking the public for help.  If anyone has information on this incident they can contact Officer Coco or Detective Harrington at 413-448-9702.
