SPRINGFIELD (WGGB) – A rescue mission by the Springfield Fire and Police Departments quickly turned into an arrest Wednesday night. Police say a 26 year-old man tried to shimmy down a kitchen stove vent on the roof of Lido’s Restaurant on Worthington Street.
Police say the suspect, Robert Kune, was a former employee of the restaurant which closed it’s doors for good on Saturday. They’re not sure what Kune’s motive was, but say the suspect didn’t even come close to making it down the ventilation shaft.
” Half his body was in, half his body was out.” Sargent John Delaney of the Springfield Police Department says. “He couldn’t move.”
The owner of Lido’s who lives above the restaurant called the police around 10pm Wednesday night after he looked out his window and noticed the vent’s roof had been removed. A closer look, and he saw Kune.
“I guess the guy missed the place or something. Not sure what he was going to try and steal. But whatever he was doing he was trying desperately to do so.” Sgt. Delaney says.
Police also say Kune has been arrested several times before. The most recent was on an arrest warrant in March. For the Lido’s incident, Kune faces breaking and entering and attempt to commit a felony charges.
