Religious Holidays Create Boost for Local Business

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WGGB) — While most people think of Valentine’s Day and the Christmas holidays as the only big days for businesses like candy stores and flower shops, the Christian Holy Week is proving to be another.

Both Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium and Nuttleman’s Florist in Northampton are using the Christian Holy Week as a chance to take advantage of an increase in business.

“The last few days have been very busy,” said Colleen Wickland of Ben and Bill’s. “We’ve seen regular customers coming in and new customers as well.”

The chocolate shop has been in Northampton for 20 years. Every year they say that Easter Sunday gives them a boost in sales.

Wickland said the store has stocked 70 pounds of both jelly beans and malted chocolate eggs in preparation for Easter, but there isn’t one specific item that customers ask for.

“Our creamed eggs are one of the specialties we make. All the bunnies — our flop eared bunnies are really popular,” said Wickland.
