Davitt Bridge In Chicopee To Close For Two Years

(CHICOPEE, Mass.) (WGGB)–Chicopee’s Davitt Bridge is closing for two years beginning Monday.

It is a major link to downtown Chicopee.

But the bridge has seen its better days and needs to be replaced.

The project will take two years.

When you’re coming over the Davitt Bridge into downtown Chicopee, one of the first businesses you’ll see is Quicky’s Restaurant.

How will the bridge closing affect business?

Jonathan Dulchinos is the Manager at Quicky’s,” I think in the beginning it might slow off, but once people start realizing that the bridge will be down there will be a lot more pickups and deliveries ,I think deliveries more so,” says Dulchinos.

People who work downtown or do businesses in downtown Chicopee will have to use alternates routes if they came into the city on the Davitt Bridge.

Meanwhile at the  other end of the city, the Willimansett Bridge connecting Chicopee to Holyoke is already closed for reconstruction.

There are  businesses in this  section of the city like Gary and Nancy’s that are  caught between two closed bridges,” We hope that it doesn’t impact business too much, we hope there’s a strategy in town hall being worked on to keep small businesses in Willimansett  alive and we just depend on our customers who come every day and we thank them for their business,” says Nicole Recor.

The Department of Transportation has contracted with the company doing the work on the Davitt Bridge to work 60 hours a week instead of 40 so the bridge can be completed quicker.

Businesses and city leaders want to minimize the inconvenience and look for better days ahead.
