Accident on Rt. 20 in West Springfield Causes Traffic Back Up

West Springfield, Mass. (WGGB) —  A truck accident on Rt. 20 has closed the roadway in the area of Dewey Street causing a significant back up of traffic.

The call came in at 4:32 p.m.  and emergency personnel responded immediately to the scene.

That’s according to West Springfield Police Captain Thomas Wilkinson who told us, “Rt. 20 in both directions is still completely shut down.  Traffic is backed up and is being diverted down Old Westfield Road and Dewey Street.  The over turned truck is lying in the middle of the road blocking the lanes.”

Wilkinson says the driver was not seriously injured and was out of the vehicle when they arrived.

Currently a tow truck is being escorted to the accident scene.  In order for the roadway to open back up, the truck will need to be overturned and moved to the side of the road, and then the debris will need to be cleaned up.

Wilkinson estimates that drivers will be able to get through around 6 p.m. although it will depend on how fast the work to clear it can be done.

The cause and circumstances surrounding the crash remain under investigation.

Police are not releasing the identity of the driver at this time.
