Crews Continue to Repair Water Main Break in Downtown Chicopee

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — Chicopee gets soaked as a water main break disrupts morning commutes.

The Chicopee Water Department was first alerted about the broken pipe at 1:30 Wednesday morning, but they couldn’t find the problem until hours later when the sinkhole appeared above it on a section of Springfield Street.

“Fortunately, no water surfaced down at this location. It took the road to collapse until we could locate it, then we shut the water off,” says Chicopee Water Department Superintendent Alan Starzyk.

Starzyk says that nobody lost their water completely, but for a while some may have lost water pressure.

Others, like Dunkin Donuts on West Street had some dirt in their water stream from the break.

“I turned it on to do the ice coffees to fill them. I turned it on and it was just brown. It was gross. Then I asked Shell if their water was like that and it was the same thing,” adds Brian Anderson, a Dunkin Donuts employee

The biggest problem the water break caused was a blocked street in front of several businesses and city hall.

Starzyk notes, “Unfortunately we do have to close off the Market Square area so we can do the work to do the repairs.”

Because that fracture will take so long to fix, commuters are asked to use detours to avoid Market Square.

“I have to find a detour right now to get to work. It’s going to take a little bit longer,” says local business owner Stanley Bys.

Chicopee Water says that repairs to the water main have been completed. However, work continues on the drain line and in backfilling hole.

Motorists may see some delays in the downtown area as the city works to complete the work.

If you experience dirt in your water from this situation you’re asked to call Chicopee Water with concerns.
