BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — The University of California, Berkeley will start offering free online courses through a nonprofit initiative launched by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Officials say UC Berkeley courses on artificial intelligence and software engineering will be available on the website www.edx.org, which was formed in May.
The two Berkeley courses brings to seven the number of courses that edX will offer this fall.
Officials say the online courses will be free and open to anyone with access to the Internet. Students who demonstrate mastery of the subjects and finish the coursework can receive certificates of completion.
EdX officials say 154,000 students from more than 160 countries registered for MIT’s first edX course this past spring. They plan to add more courses from more universities in the future.
