Multiple Fires Challenge Crews in Central Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — A wildfire stirred by high winds sweeping through rural woodlands just south of the Oklahoma City area has set at a number of homes on fire.

Cleveland County officials say homes “have been lost” but didn’t have a number. Emergency workers ordered residents in 75 to 100 homes east of the city of Noble to leave as fire crews fought the wind-driven blaze covering about a square mile. News helicopter footage showed flames jumping through treetops, with thick smoke.

There were no immediate reports of injuries from Friday’s fires, which also charred the earth near Geary and Luther.

An earlier blaze near Geary burned about three square miles.

National Guard and the Bureau of Indian Affairs helicopters also were fighting a fire in Creek County.
