NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A 46-year-old New Haven man with a loaded handgun has been arrested at a movie theater.
Officers arrived at the Criterion-Bow Tie Cinemas shortly after 10 p.m. Tuesday after managers reported a man inside with a handgun.
Sung H. Hwang, waiting for the Batman film, “The Dark Knight Rises,” to begin, refused officers’ orders to put his hands in the air. He remained in his seat, using his cell phone.
Police say he was taken into custody by force and charged with breach of peace and interfering with police. The gun was in his waistband.
Police Chief Dean M. Esserman praised the nearly 20 officers and two sergeants who responded to the call along with several Yale University police officers.
Hwang has a valid Connecticut permit to carry a pistol.

I am betting this guy was hoping to be a hero. I knew this kind of thing was coming and the first kid to pop his popcorn bag is going to get shot at.
What was the illegal part of it? He has CCW permit. Besides not listening to officers.
So let me get this right, based soley on the information in this article, this guy made no threat to anyone, was carrying legally as many people do, and the police had a 22 officer response? I am curious to know the rest of this story.
I still think this is unbelievable! He may not have been “posing a threat” @ the immediate time, but what about after the movie started. Haven’t enough people suffered already with shootings?
@stacey everyone who has the legal right to carry a fire arm and protect themselves, you believe will cause a threat at some time? I am a law abiding, permit having citizen and I carry my handgun everywhere I go. Solely for the fact of protecting my family and people like you, in a public place if need be. It was a horrfic tradgedy what happened in Auroa but the the fact that someone has a gun is not illegal. There has to be more to this story.
Well said Ed.
There is no reason to walk around with a gun. If you don’t feel safe without it you need help.
Another news station misleading us. The man was arrested because he failed to comply with a lawful order not because he had a gun. He was lawfully licensed.
I’ve seen a man with a gun in a movie theater before and I’m pretty sure he was licensed. Nothing went through my head, he was just fine.
@thomas you must live in a bubble. If you walk around now a days anywhere and feel completely safe you are the one that needs help. Thete is people shooting up malls, courts, movies, eating peoples faces off. And you can just walk around and wait to become a victim or be prepared if it happens. Id rather not take the chance.
I’m pretty sure the cops were trying to be the heros and then when the guy turned out to be no threat and carrying legally they were red faced and had to make something more of it then it was. On the other hand, anyone who CCs should know better then to brandish in public. If he was more careful he would have been fine. Even though CT technically allows open carry, when people freak out, cops react without taking laws into consideration. Just an all around poor job by everyone involved.
