Accident and HAZAT Situation Causes Traffic Backup on Mass. Pike

PALMER, Mass. (WGGB) — Two separate incidents caused a six mile backup on the westbound side of the Mass. Turnpike Thursday afternoon.

The first incident involved the clean-up of a hazardous material situation near I-84 in Sturbridge. State Police say that they were called to help in the clean-up of some leaking chlorine from a truck.

That situation has been cleared up and traffic should be moving in the area of Exit 9.

The second incident involves a car and a tractor trailer that crashed right before Exit 8 in Palmer.

The two collided at 1:45 p.m.

The accident, at one time, was blocking all travel lanes, but just before 3:00 p.m., the left lane reopened.

All lanes of the Pike have now reopened.

There is no word on any injuries from the accident.
