Victim of Construction Fall on I-91 Identified, Company Speaks
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) – At about 11:30 Wednesday evening, state police say an employee from Liddell Brothers fell about 60 feet from a gap in the median of I-91 in Springfield, just north of exit 7, the Hall of Fame Ave. exit. The 46-year-old, Robert Parrott of Fitchburg landed near the railroad track below.
The company the man works for specializes in traffic services and highway construction. Wednesday night there was construction work being done on I-91 southbound where this incident happened. But on Thursday night crews were not seen working in that area.
Following the accident, some rail traffic was temporarily suspended but has since resumed.
In a release to ABC40 News Thursday, Liddell Brothers’ Lawyer, Richard Wayne says, “I and Liddell Brothers were saddened to learn that early this morning one of our employees, Robert Parrott, died while performing work on U.S. I-91 by Exit 7 in the Springfield, MA area. I and the Company wish to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt sympathy to Mr. Parrott’s family and friends.”
Wayne went on to say, “To the best of our knowledge, at the time of Mr. Parrott’s death, he and a co-worker were working in cooperation with a detail officer of the Massachusetts State Police. The work being performed was pursuant to a service contract between Liddell Brothers and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation.”
The circumstances of Mr. Parrott’s death are still under investigation by the Company, the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, the Hampden County District Attorney’s office and the Occupational, Safety & Health Administration. Liddell Brothers is cooperating in those investigations.
“Mr. Parrott had been employed by Liddell Brothers for several years. He was an excellent worker, had many years of work experience, and was highly regarded by the Company, his co-workers and colleagues,” added Wayne.
Mr. Parrott was a member of Laborers’ Union, Local No. 39
The following is a statement from MassDOT Highway Administrator Frank DePaola:
“MassDOT wishes to express its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the Liddell Brothers Inc. employee who died overnight. As MassDOT’s contractor, Liddell was deploying safety devices to protect our engineers performing a bridge inspection on I-91. Over the years, Liddell has been hired as the general contractor on 55 MassDOT projects. Safety is our number one priority. If reviews of this incident, by our law enforcement or safety partners, reveal changes are necessary to improve safety in our work zones, we will implement those changes.”
An autopsy will be conducted by the Hampden County Medical Examiner’s Office.
