Police say the victim positively identified her attacker as Howard Ray Dukes, a man with whom she had a rocky year-long relationship with. They say Dukes is no stranger to the police department, charged with dealing drugs, carrying guns, and attempted robbery in the past.
His latest stint occurred on September 4th outside a house on Humbert St. At 12:25am, police say several neighbors were outdoors to witness a silver car slowly drive up the street.
“There was a verbal altercation going on in this car.” Springfield Police Sergeant John Delaney says. “They could see a man was driving and a woman was in the passenger seat.”
Police say the victim and Dukes exited the car. They began pushing each other. It was then witnesses say it appeared Dukes punched the victim several times. What they thought was a fist, was actually a knife.
“She was stabbed in the face, her left ear was almost taken off. She was stabbed in the arm several times, you could see defensive wounds underneath. She was also stabbed in the shoulder and the chest area.” Sgt. Delaney says.
Police administered first aid to the victim at the scene and she was later taken to the hospital. Howard Ray Dukes is still on the streets, but police believe he is still in Springfield where his family resides.
