Local Service Member Honored

Springfield, Mass. (WGGB) — Sergeant Elisaul Virella was honored Wednesday evening by Representative Cheryl Coakley-Rivera for his continued service.

Virella is part of the 82nd Airborne Division, just back from his second tour in Afghanistan. Coakley-Rivera presented him with a proclamation at the Fort Restaurant in Springfield.

He says it’s nice just to know people appreciation what military members do.

Sgt. Elisaul Virella told ABC40 News, “What that means to me is people caring cause sometimes when you are overseas you think back at home people don’t care about us, people don’t support us, so this is a big change. It does show people back at home really do care and support us.”

Virella also received an award from Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno for his service.
