Mass. Police Shoot Moose Near Busy Highway
October 3rd, 2012
LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) — State environmental police had to shoot a moose that was hanging around the busy juncture of two highways in Leominster because the big animal refused to move.
The moose was killed at about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday after several hours of hanging around the intersection of Routes 2 and 12.
Local police had been tracking the moose and trying to coax it away from the busy roadways and closer to the Nashua River, but it refused to budge.
Environmental police were called to the scene and made the decision to shoot the moose, which would pose a danger to motorists if it went into the road.
Leominster police Sgt. Richard Kinney says authorities prefer not to kill animals.

wow! You couldnt even traquilize him and relocate the animal? Quick judgement. How sad
so messed up!!! why couldn’t they just tranquilize it ****ing ********
seriously? Shooting it was the ONLY option???? fkn morons…
Hate it when they kill an animal!
Tranquilizers don’t work like they do in the movies. What if the animal bolted onto the highway and killed someone? I am sure the “professionals” on scene are more prepared to make these decisions than you are from your couch.
That’s ****ed up. They didnt have to shoot it. Big deal if it backed up traffic or was hanging around some ****. They had many options. And one was not to shoot and kill . ********.. Yes *******. Enviromental police know how to tranquilize and if they dont or are ***** maybe they should find different profession
Plenty of other ways of dealing with the moose than killing it!!
Guess they didn’t think a tranq gun and a flatbed was a good idea? That pisses me off. But oh let a bear go into Hamp
So they shoot it that is pretty sad!!! What is wrong with trankquilizing it and moving it somewhere else??
Wtf how cruel just kill !! Let’s hope we don’t get in the way.
Hey Jeff I’m not an armchair critic, lay some credentials behind your name and then you can respond. You dose anything high enough it drops! In Alaska they set up an perimeter to avoid the “shot and bolt” scenario. Peace for that moose. Shame on the EPO or cop that pulled the trigger.
.thats so disgusting
Sad, but if they did tranq it and it ran out into an intersection, there would be even more of a cry about why it wasn’t taken care of properly.
That’s just ****ed up! I could see if it was a human. That is just wrong. Unreal.
what the hell, they could have done something other than that, stupid jerks
Kelly what are your credentials ?
All your comments are heartfelt, but unless you know all the information you shouldn’t pass judgement on the EP. They did what they had to do to protect human lives and causing a major accident at a very busy intersection
open up a hunting season in mass…I sure hope the meat went to good use .and they did show the animal respect by giveing the meat to the hungry or homeless
Well If the moose ran into a moving car you people would be complaining why it wasn’t prevented.
Who gets to claim the moose meat. Good eatin’!
we move in and destroy their habitat then kill them when they come into ours…hmmm humans !!!!
Wow thats ****ing crazy! No other way to move the moose.
I do’t believe in hunting either would humans like to be hunted??
Stop traffic then take care of the moose
In the effort of sharing your vast knowledge, maybe you should call the authorities and share your methods Kelly. I am sure they are eager to learn the proper way to do their job.
Good idea Tina, the trooper could have yelled Freeze in a loud stern voice and all of the cars would have suddenly stopped and made the area safe. Or they could have tried to organize traffic to a stop. In the mean time, if the Moose ran into traffic and someone’s child was killed, would it have been worth it. I am compassionate about the death of the animal, but understand that our trusted officials made a judgment call in the interest of public safety. Armchair critics, have an easy job pointing out fault without all of the facts.
Reuse and recycle
Really! I think killing it was Bull****… I had a bear in my yard when my son was little and all the kids were out playing. The environmental police came and sedated him and took him back to the woods. I don’t think they needed to kill him, they could have stopped traffic so they could have moved him. They are always quick to shoot!!! Wtf
