Tech High Class of ’42 Celebrates 70th Reunion

(EAST LONGMEADOW, Mass.) (WGGB)–There were plenty of hugs and smiles as members of Springfield’s Tech High Class of 1942 held their 70th high school reunion at Spoleto’s in East Longmeadow.

June Stibolt says some of them did a little traveling to get there,”I think we’ll have about 35 people and they’ve come from Florida , from New York state, all over Massachusetts,  from Georgia,” says Stibolt.

This class of ’42 is a very close-knit class, they share a lot of fond memories, they were patriotic,  they were seniors when Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941.

Bob Menz remembers going to class the very next day and  discussing with their teacher  the date which will live in infamy,”During that discussion, 8 of our classmates just got up, walked out of the room went down to the recruiting station, signed up for the Marines, the Air Force, the Navy,  Army,” says Menz.

And many of those who went to war never came home says Stuart Benson,”We lost a lot of the class, I don’t remember the exact number but I think we had well over 300 graduates, if I had to just estimate I’d say maybe 30 or 40 we lost,” says Benson.

There were all kinds of memories shared by these close classmates.

Ethel Hudson who still lives in Springfield will never forget seeing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt when he came to Springfield,”We stood outside of our school at the corner of State and Spring and waved to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, that was the highlight of my life,” says Hudson.

For the class of 42, it was a day to come together , strengthen their friendships and share memories that will last a lifetime.
