(WGGB) — With Columbus Day right around the corner, weekend travelers hit the roads Friday and that left more than a 50 mile back up going westbound on the Massachusetts Turnpike.
According to the Westfield State Police Department traffic was backed up about 55 miles from I-495 at Exit 11 A in Westborough, Hopkinton all the way to I-291 at Exit 6 in Chicopee.
State Police say it was due to the fact that there were so many travelers on the road for the start of the holiday weekend and that the road filled beyond capacity.
They also added that the heavy, bumper to bumper traffic started after 3 p.m. Friday and went until about 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Drivers can always call the MassDOT information line at 511 for traffic updates at any time.

Glad I’m home watching Fox 40
WOW!!!
Really? That’s messed
That’s insane. Those people might as well give up and go home.
Wow! I knew it seemed pretty quiet out there!
That’s maddening. I can’t even imagine.
Bummer
It took 3 hrs to go from Boston to Hartford
Wtf crazy!!!
A. Do that many people get the Columbus Day holiday off? Why? B. Why now? Isn’t it odd that in the summer we don’t see this sort of traffic issue? What’s the REAL story here?
Is that a record?
Leaf peepers??
55 miles. Don’t they know how much gas cost.
It was so bad!
While I was traveling eastbound around 5:30pm I noticed there was a pretty major accident on the westbound side of the pike as well. I’m sure the accident didn’t help matters and I’m sure it wasn’t the only one on the pike today….
I have seen and been a backup westbound from 495 to 84. Travel information sites should promote Rt. 20, Rt. 9 or Rt. 2. Depending on destination I recomend Rt. 20 or Rt. 2 either one give nice views of changing leafs.
just wondering why it was west and not north for the fall foilage…
