“There are two things that are really driving this. Number one is fuel efficiency. The spare tire the jack are about forty pounds. Cutting that down can do some modest improvement of fuel efficiency, ” said Joseph Ferraro, Vice President, Automotive Services AAA.
Cars without a spare tire come with either run-flat tires, an inflator or sealant kit.
“A lot of what we see is blowouts. People hit a pot hole, a curb a tire blows out those types of solutions aren’t going to do anything and without a spare tire we are gonna have to end up towing the car,” said Ferraro.
Travis Koske of City Tire in Springfield says the fix it yourself sealant can even harm the tire down the road.
“A substance that shouldn’t be in the tire in the first place it kinda leeches into the rubber, rubber dust in there makes a mess out of everything and it’s very difficult to clean it out” said Koske.
Koske adds the run-flats, which are designed to let a person continue driving after the tire gets punctured, don’t always work.
“You can still run it down the road till it deteriorates till the tread comes right off and then you are stuck on the side of the road with nothing,” said Koske.
If you are looking to buy a new car make sure to ask whether it has a spare or not.
