Ball Pythons Abandoned Near Montague Water Treatment Plant

MONTAGUE, Mass. (WGGB) — It was a worker at the Montague Waste Water Treatment Facility who came across a Ball Python snake Thursday. Another of the non-poisonous snakes was found along the nearby bike path.

Police called Shane Rich, a snake expert and snake lover. Rich said they were likely abandoned because they got too expensive for the owners.

“This one here would have to eat large rats,” said Rich. “And they sell for $9.99 a piece. And they don’t realize adult needs of them. Once they hit this size, they realize they can’t afford them anymore. ”

Rich said dropping them off in the woods was a ‘death sentence’ for the snakes because of the colder weather. The python’s need to be in an environment in the 80′s ore they’ll die.

The snakes are now going home with Rich.

“They’ve already had a rough life and they will stay with me where they’ll be properly cared for, loved,” said Rich.
