HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) — Do you remember the feeling of getting a birthday card in the mail, opening it and some money falling out? Some younger generations might not know it.
“My nephew’s birthday passed, I gave him a card with $5 in it, and he took the $5 and just dropped the card. So yeah, it’s over. Death of the card, nobody cares anymore, it’s not the thought that counts,” Jeffrey Timmons relayed.
Hallmark is one of the most recognizable brands of greeting cards, and they’re seeing a sharp decline in sales. So much that they’re closing down a plant in Kansas that makes 1/3 of their products.
It will cut 300 jobs, and move some to other plants.
While Holyoke’s Target is not experiencing a decline in card sales, some customers blame the internet, and free sites like Facebook and Some E-Cards for the cultural shift. “I think it’s sad we’ve gone to the wayside with all this new technology, texting, and skyping, and all that. It’s taken the personal out of it,” said Mark Boyer. “Facebook’s a little easier, everyone’s got it on their phone,” Caitlin Basler chimed.
“Post it on their wall, everybody likes that. You post it, they get 10 likes, they’re all happy. You give them a card; they’re looking at you like you’re the cheapest person in the world. You’re the man if you put something on Facebook,” added Timmons.
Others remain old fashioned. “I love it. I love getting cards. Who doesn’t love getting mail?” miled Kristine Trudeau.
For now, the layoffs in Kansas won’t affect the plant in Enfield, CT.
Hallmark’s rival, American Greetings recently hired 125 workers as part of an expansion allowing customers to design their own cards online.
