Walmart Testing Same-Day Home Delivery

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — Just in time for holidays, the world’s largest brick and mortar retailer is taking on the world’s largest on-line retailer.

In Philadelphia, Minneapolis and a handful of other U.S. cities, Walmart is offering same-day delivery for certain products bought on-line.

“I think it’s a good idea because it saves you the drive out to the store,” said Kevin Lempke of Holyoke. “So, you don’t have to waste the gas. You can stay home and buy it.”

“I think that would be great,” said Joy Thompson from Worcester. “They’re really going to go after the Amazon market. But they have do free shipping.”

It’s not, though. Walmart is charging a flat ten dollars with no minimum purchase required.

Amazon.com shipping is free and is renowned for being quick. However, same-day delivery is only available in limited areas due in part to a small network of Amazon warehouses.

Under Walmart’s model, items will ship to a person from the closest store.

Wal-Mart has nearly 4,000 stores in the U.S.

During the program test, Walmart is only offering same-day delivery for toys, electronics and certain other products. It already offers same-day delivery for groceries in San Jose and San Francisco, CA.
