Retail Sales Jump, Could Rise Even More Heading Into the Holidays

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) –Manager George Rodriguez has noticed a recent surge in electronic sales, especially big screen TVs, at Manny’s TV and Appliances in West Springfield. “I’m seeing a slight uptick from a couple months ago. That’s accurate. I’m seeing more people coming in, making decisions, so yes, it has been a little bit better,” he said.

Manny’s isn’t alone. According to the Commerce Department, retail spending rose 1.1% in September, much more than earlier estimates of the 0.8% economists thought they would see.

Rodriguez hopes it’s an indicator that it’s boosting consumer confidence, in a still shaky economy. “I would love to see that. Back to the days where there was a lot more business. But people are cautious, they’re spending their money a lot more carefully, but the industry I’m in, I mean, if, your washer breaks, you need a washer, you got to get one, he said”

The jump is the biggest seen since October 2010, and Rodriguez says he expects sales of electronics, like these 3d TVs, to jump even more heading into the holiday season. “As far as specials, it becomes highly promotional in the TV category, and all the manufacturers have all kinds of specials and really good deals around that time of the year, so that’s always a good time to get something like that.”

You might not have to wait until the day after Thanksgiving to get your hands on some electronic deals because Rodriguez says pre-Black Friday sales are the newest trend.

Yet there’s one rush of people Rodriguez is sure he’ll see around that time his friends. “They always do. Friends are always looking for something for nothing. That’s not seasonal, no.”

While Manny’s doesn’t have Black Friday schedules just yet, they will have extended hours.
