Car Crashes into Building in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — The location of a Springfield school bus stop is a concern for many parents tonight after a car accidentally plows into it just minutes after more than a dozen kids were picked up for school.

“Thank God the kids were already picked up because it would have been a terrible tragedy. The kids stand on the steps in the morning,” says parent Cherrie Torres.

Torres says her 12-year-old son is one of them, waiting for the bus with more than a dozen other middle schoolers each morning at 111 Wilbraham Road.

Friday, only minutes spared students the impact of this car police say lost control at a busy intersection..

“That’s right where we stand. That’s a scary thing.”

“…Tends to an accident every few weeks.”

Robbin Jones works in the building the car hit. He says it’s a dangerous spot for kids to wait, whether picking up or dropping off, and he wants the bus stop moved..

“This is a designated bus stop. We’ve already put in a request with the school department about trying to get it moved a week or two ago. I don’t know how long these things take but hopefully this will speed up the process,” says Jones.

Torres also wants the bus stop moved and says what happened Friday is only further confirmation.

What’s more, Torres says kids are dropped off from school at this Wilbraham Road stop. It’s done across the street from the accident site, forcing many students to cross the busy intersection.

“I hope they think about this and safety of our kids and what is convenient for them.”

Police say there were no injuries from the accident, with the driver walking away from the crash.
