Mass. Police to Charge Driver in Fatal Accident

WHITMAN, Mass. (AP) — Authorities are seeking criminal charges against an Attleboro man for allegedly striking and killing a man and severely injuring a 4-year-old girl with his pickup truck in Whitman.

Whitman Police Chief Scott Benton and Plymouth District Attorney Timothy Cruz said a complaint was sought Friday against 46-year-old Richard Brown in connection with the Sept. 9 accident. The complaint seeks charges of negligent motor vehicle homicide, operating to endanger, speeding and failure to yield to a pedestrian. A clerk-magistrate will decide whether charges will be issued.

Police say 38-year-old Edward Cordwell Jr. was walking and the little girl was on her bike when they were struck as they crossed a Whitman street. They were not at a crosswalk.

Cordwell was the boyfriend of the girl’s mother. Brown could not immediately be reached for comment Friday.
