The Super 60 Luncheon. It’s an annual fall tradition in the Pioneer Valley, and one that — for the past 23 years, going back to when it was first called the Fabulous 50 — has been a much-anticipated celebration of the depth and diversity of the region’s business community.
And this year, on Oct. 26 at Chez Josef in Agawam, there is apparently even more to celebrate. Indeed, the numbers posted by the 60 companies in the Total Revenue and Total Growth categories provide some potent evidence that this region may finally be moving beyond the Great Recession that began in 2008 and has shown stubborn staying power.
In the Total Growth category, for example, the average growth rate over the past year for the 30 winners was 44%, compared to the 23% figure recorded by last year’s honorees. Overall, 50% of these companies logged growth in excess of 50%, and 15% reported growth of more than 100%. Last year, only half of the top 30 companies recorded growth in excess of 30%.
In the Total Revenue category, meanwhile, the average revenue for the 30 winners was $35 million, and the total for the group was more than $1 billion.
Jeffrey Ciuffreda, president of the Affiliated Chambers of Commerce of Greater Springfield, believes those numbers say something.
“Small business is the backbone of our region, and the success of this year’s winners is a clear indication that our regional economy is strong,” he told BusinessWest.
Beyond the numbers, Ciuffreda said the mix of businesses and the number of economic sectors represented by the 60 winners are also positive notes for the region.
“It is interesting to me, in looking at the list of this year’s winners, that we have a great mix of companies that have been here for many years, some more than 100, and others that are relatively new,” he explained. “Many of the established companies in our area are in the Total Revenue column, which shows that, after those many years in existence, they continue to be strong and great sources for jobs in our area.
“In the Total Growth category,” he continued, “you see many of the newer companies that are establishing themselves and probably adding jobs to accommodate that growth. The diversity of businesses in the overall list also speaks to why our economy here is doing relatively well. Clearly, we have some challenges in certain areas, but overall this list is good news and foreshadows better news ahead.”
The top finishers in the Growth category are Powervestors, LLC, the investment arm of Aegis Energy Services; R & R Industries Inc., a full-service metal and auto recycler; and Joseph Freedman Co. Inc., an industrial scrap-metal recycling company. In the Revenue category, O’Connell Oil Associates Inc., which operates three oil-company locations, 29 Convenience Plus stores, and seven gas stations, takes the top spot; Savage Arms (Savage Sports Corp.), the Westfield-based designer and manufacturer of rifles, shotguns, and muzzle loaders for the hunting and shooting-sports industries, finished second; and Springfield College, which placed in the top three for revenue for the third year in a row, landed in the third spot.
See Profiles of this year’s Super 60 companies below.
Beyond presentation of the Super 60 awards, the annual luncheon traditionally provides several program elements to inform and inspire attendees, and this year is no exception. The keynoters will be Stanley Kowalski III, chairman of the board for FloDesign Inc. and founder of FloDesign Wind Turbine, and Mass. Secretary of Housing and Economic Development Greg Bialecki.
As creator of FloDesign Wind Turbine, Kowalski led the team that won the MIT Clean Energy Entrepreneurship Prize as well as the Ignite Clean Energy competition, totaling $300,000. He later earned more than $50 million in investments in 18 months from some of the world’s most prominent investment firms.
The company was also among the first recipients of entrepreneurial support under Bialecki, and has been hailed for its “transformative technology” by U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu.
For more information regarding the Super 60 or to make reservations, call (413) 755-1313, or order online at www.myonlinechamber.com by Oct. 24. Tickets cost $50 for ACCGS members and $70 for non-members.
