Storm Damage In Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. (WGGB) — Strong winds toppled trees and knocked out power Monday night.

Several trees hit homes on South East Street.

“I heard a crash and felt the house shake and my son started screaming,” said Tom Meyers, Amherst.

Meyers’ son was just a few feet away from where the tree could have came crashing through the wall.

“No one was hurt, but it was frightening and it shook the house more than the recent earthquake did,” said Meyers.

The winds blew part of a barn roof off, also on South East St.

“All of the sudden we heard a really loud ripping sound,” said Abby Getman.

Getman saw the roof fly through the air. She says no one was hurt, but it could have been a close call for her.

“It was a little nerve-racking since I don’t know ten minutes before I was out with my dog so that’s a little bit insane,” said Getman.

Downtown was without power for much of the night and a tree sparked a brush fire on Amity Street.

“There were sparks flying everywhere catching brush on fire and all the sudden I see large trees on fire,” said Michael Williams, caught fire on video.

Police say there were no reports of any injuries because of the storm.
