Helmets to Hardhats Program, One Local Union is Accepting Applications

Chicopee, Mass. (WGGB) — With Veterans Day just 1 week away, some local unions are accepting applications for the Helmets to Hardhats program.

It trains veterans in the construction field by giving them apprenticeships and helping them find jobs.

While there are opportunities in every area of the construction field, the Local 104 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union participates in the program and advocates its benefits.

“We take military veterans who are trying to make that transition from active duty to civilian life and not only do we offer them a job, but we give them the opportunity to learn a highly valued trade,” explains Michael Langone, representative for Local 104.

Program participant, Brandon Lamourex told us, “It’s good because it’s very well structured, and for anyone who has been in the service, you know how structure is a priority.  It’s easy to roll into it, you’ve got school two nights a week, and everything is set up for you. You’re not left to figure anything out on your own. It’s a good program.”

If you are interested in the program, you can pick up an information packet and application at the Local 104 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union this week or next week from 9:00 a.m. until noon.  Local 104 is located at 168 Chicopee Street in Chicopee.
