Caught on Tape: Spfld. Clerk Swings Baseball Bat at Knife-Wielding Robber

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — A surveillance video tonight that you just have to see. A criminal finds himself trapped in the very gas station he just robbed.

Police hope you’ll be able to help them identify the suspect we’re about to show you.

Police say the suspect in the video you’re watching figured his robbery escape would be out the same way he came in.

After grabbing $400 in cash from the register of the Racing Mart on Page Boulevard earlier this week, he turns to leave but the door is locked.

“Buzz it! Buzz it!” yells the suspect.

The cashier pulls out a bat in defense. In a frantic state, the criminal pulls a knife and shouts threats towards the clerk.

“Buzz it! Buzz it or I’m killing you!

The suspect smashes a window pane on the door, then he goes to the door on the other side of the shop, unlocks it and leaves.

Police say the suspect ran off to a car parked on an adjacent street.

The man hasn’t been seen since and police are actively searching.

They’re hoping this surveillance video will lead to an arrest.

If you have any information, you are asked to call Springfield Police at (413) 787-6355 or you can ‘Text-A-Tip.’ You can sent it to CRIMES (274637) and in the message, type SOLVE and your tip.
