CHICOPEE, Mass. (WGGB) — An explosion was heard loud and clear in Chicopee and nearby towns and cities Sunday morning around 1 a.m. A large stash of fireworks was detonated by state police in the area of Depot Street near the river.
“It sounded like a bomb, said Linda Dudek who lives on Granby Road.
“It shook the ground a little bit,” she said. “It was really, really scary.”
It was the same for her neighbor Marsha Young.
“It sounded like a big trailer was in a crash or something,” said Young.
It all started according to police on Terimar Street Saturday night. Police raided a home where the fireworks were found. They called in the State Police Bomb Squad which took them to safely dispose of.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, Mayor Michael Bissonnette said he “will be asking for a full explanation as to why this explosion could not wait until morning.”
People scared by it want that question answered, too.
“It was very disturbing,” said Young. “Waking people up especially at the time it was at. It wasn’t fair to us. They should have chosen a better time.”
