17 Train Cars Derail in Housatonic

Housatonic, Mass. (WGGB) — 17 train cars derailed in the Great Barrington area Thursday evening leaving one leaning on a nearby building.

According to Police Officer Jonathan Finnerty, they received a call at 6:52 p.m. for a train that had derailed in Housatonic.

When emergency personnel arrived they found 17 freight cars off the tracks.  None tipped over, but Officer Finnerty says one of the trains is still resting on a building which was not damaged as a result.

The Federal Railroad Administration has been notified of the derailment which occurred at 168 Front Street.

Both the Great Barrington Police and Fire Departments remain on scene at this time.

Finnerty says the Housatonic Railroad Company is working on getting the train back onto the tracks and they expect the work will be completed tomorrow.

No one was injured in this incident and police report that there is no danger to the public.

It is not known yet why the train derailed, but the incident does remain under investigation.
