SPRINGFIELD, MASS (WGGB)- Twinkies are more than just a snack to fulfill a guilty pleasure… they are more like an American icon.
Today, the top of the Hostess Company’s website read:
“We are sorry to announce that Hostess Brands, Inc. has been forced by a Bakers Union strike to shut down all operations and sell all company assets.Thank you for all of your loyalty and support over the years.”
After stocking up on our favortie hostess treats ourselves today, we ripped open a box and took to the streets to hear what people in downtown Springfield had to say.
Stephanie Woods was surprised to hear the news,” They are? Are You kidding me?” “When i went to girl scout camp my nick- name was Twinkie.”
And for other locals, the sweet treat brings back childhood memories, “I’m 57 years old, I’ve had Twinkies since before Junior High School.”
This means not only the loss of the Twinkies, Wonderbread, Ho-Hos and other Hostess products, but also the loss of 18,500 jobs.
A local franchise denied a comment with us today, but we did speak with Hostess representative Tom Becker on the phone. Becker said that “This was the last thing anybody wanted to happen. We had hoped the strikers would come back to work.” He also informed us that there are hopes buyers will emerge because there is a lot of value in the brand, but of course the products will no longer be made the hostess way.
