Obedience schools don't just train the animal, they train the owners/handlers as well. You may not think this way, but when you are training an animal, you are training yourself too. For example, you are training a dog. The dog doesn't know the trick/command/etc, you now have to figure out what to do next. You learn how to handle dog to make it do what u want it to.

Just some advice for places to call for advice: pet stores, vets/animal hospitals, 24 hour animal hospitals (for after hour advice), animal control, mspca/failing, the police, etc. There is no excuse. I believe that if you feel you're going to harm an animal, you can call 911, and I am quite sure they would rather help you, than get a call later to respond to an animal cruelty call.

Wow! How can people BEAT their animals? Their is other forms of discipline. If you have questions about what to do, there are plenty of places you could call. Then there is obedience schools. If you can't control your animal, have a heart and bring it to a no-kill shelter. They will do what they can to train it. There are so many options!!! The only time you should discipline your animal violently, is if it should, without being provoked, harm someone, or other extenuating circumstances. And even after that, get the animal to the vet (there may be something wrong medically), or get help with training/disciplining.
