Former Holyoke Mayor Pluta reacts to Mayor Morse Casino Reversal
When he was elected mayor a year ago, Alex Morse said he opposed bringing a casino to Holyoke.
Former Mayor Elaine Pluta favored a casino .
On Monday, Pluta reacted to the mayor’s change of heart.,”First of all I’m excited for the city of Holyoke, to be finally in the game, pursuing a casino license, this position by the mayor has vindicated my position on the issue,” says Pluta.
Pluta says down the road, Holyoke will be short of revenue and a casino would be a new source of revenue that city needs.
Mayor Morse defended his casino position,”My job is to protect the people of Holyoke ,use my judgement for what I was elected for and again I wasn’t elected to keep a casino out of the city of Holyoke, I was elected to stand up and represent everybody,” says Morse.
Pluta says the site the mayor’s talking about at Mountain Park is not the best site for the city,”Mountain Park may not be conducive to putting a building on it because of the ledge up there on the mountain , they may have to look at Wyckoff because that would be the best place to put a casino if you’re going to go in that area,” says Pluta.
Would Pluta consider running against morse next year,”I will not be running for mayor , I’m not considering it at this time, I am retired and am very happy, in my retirement,” says Pluta.
Despite the angry reaction from Ward 7 voters to the mayor’s now looking at a casino for Holyoke, Morse says it won’t deter him from seeking re-election,”I intend to run for re-election , being mayor isn’t an easy job and I think it’s important for us to be able to make decisions not based on popularity or politics,”says Morse.
