State: Record Voter Turnout for 2012 Election

BOSTON (WGGB) – The state reports that a record number of voters turned out for the November 6 election.

In statistics released Tuesday by the Secretary of State’s office, 3,184,196 votes were cast on that Tuesday. That figure marks 73.3 percent of all registered voters in Massachusetts.

The 2012 vote total beat the previous record set back in the 2008 election by about 80,000 votes.

“I am very proud of our Massachusetts voters who came out in record numbers, and also of our election officials across the Commonwealth. Together we had a remarkable day, free of controversy or disruption,” says Mass. Secretary of State William Galvin.

The final election tallies will be submitted to the Governor’s Council for certification Wednesday.

What about the unregistered that voted? Probably about 20% of the total.
