Holyoke Priest Describes Being Mugged of Collection Money

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WGGB) — A thief gets away with a sizable sum of money after robbing a Catholic priest of the collection.

Father Alex Cymerman, pastor of Our Lady of The Cross, was robbed after the four o’clock mass on November 24th.

“It happened so fast that I didn’t have a chance to react in anyway. I picked myself up a little bit and I yelled at the guy God is going to get you for this” said Father Alex.

He explains it happened as he was getting close to the rectory door, which is across the street from the church.

“All of the sudden something hit me from someplace and someone kind of knocked me down and just grabbed the bag from under my coat and off they went,” said Father Alex.

He suffered a bruise under his right eye and is getting physical therapy for damage to his rotator cuff.

The church estimates the thief got away with about $2,500. Father Alex says the robbery comes just after they started their increased giving campaign for the weekly collection.

“It kind of makes me feel bad you know people are making this extra sacrifice and something like this happens,” said Father Alex.

He is just relieved the attack wasn’t worse and he is now more aware of his surroundings.

“Since all this happened now when I go out I kind of check around and with a little bit of flutter in my heart you know, cause you know the darkness you never know what’s there,” said Father Alex.

Police are still investigating. No arrest has been made.
