WAKEFIELD, Mass. (WGGB) — 49-year-old John Burbine has been indicted on charges that he sexually abused 13 young children at a daycare run by his wife.

Burbine is a level one sex offender who was convicted of assault and battery on a child in 1989. Between 2010 and 2011, prosecutors say Burbine raped and assaulted the boys and girls ranged in age from eight days to three years. Hundreds of hours of video footage of the alleged assaults that investigators say were made by Burbine have been confiscated.

“I have never ever seen a case this bad,” said Middlesex County District Attorney Gerald Leone.

Leone says Burbine’s wife Marian knew her husband was a level one sex offender. And out of their home, she ran the unlicensed day care , Waterfall Education Center. He helped care for the kids. The indictment alleges 100 counts of abuse. She denies knowing about any of the abuse

“She allowed her husband John Burbine to care for children,” said Leone. “Care for children despite knowing that John Burbine was a convicted sex offender and that the Department of Children and Families had supported allegations of sexual abuse against her husband.”

It all began to unfold in July when the state investigated an abuse complaint against Burbine involving a two-year-old. He was arrested in September and held in jail where he remains. His wife was charged with reckless endangerment of a child and put under house arrest which continues.

John Burbine’s lawyer said his client will plead not guilty at his Dec. 12 arraignment. His wife is due in court later in the month.

Leone expects there are more than the 13 victims already identified, He’s urging anyone with information to contact his office.
